Are Local Facebook Groups Good Lead Sources?

As soon as websites became the dominant form of marketing for home services companies, contractors began bloating their websites with content to rank on Google and give potential customers all the information they could ever want in one spot. It became a company's virtual brochure and the bigger and more in-depth, the better (but not anymore).
Fast forward to today. Do you remember a time when you were on a site for more than 5 minutes? With so much information and busy schedules, customers want the information QUICKLY and EFFICIENTLY and don't want to navigate an entire website to find it.
Information has become some overloaded that many homeowners are turning to an old (but arguably the best) form of marketing - referrals. You likely belong to a few of these groups on Facebook, LinkedIn, or your favorite social media platform. Someone posts something simple like "Who is the best AC company in Aldie?" and members jump to the comments section (of course we would recommend Eagles HVAC).
Instead of relying on Google, Yelp, and other forms of shaky-trustworthiness, homeowners use these recommendations to make quick decisions on who to call when they need a repair or installation.
So yes contractors, local Facebook groups at this point should be a major focus for you. These leads are golden, timely, and qualified better than a lot of new customer leads you're paying for on Google.
Best Types of Groups
Here are some common groups to look out for:
Community groups (Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax, Ashburn, Leesburg, Gainesville, Manassas)
HOA groups
Moms groups
Neighborhood groups
"Talk of [Town]" groups
Buy/Sell/Community groups
New resident groups
Many of the highest-performing groups have 5,000–50,000+ local members.
How to Get Leads From Local Groups
A few things you can do to leverage these groups include:
Commenting with helpful advice and contact info instead of just pasting your company name
Regularly post helpful content instead of just lead-based messaging
Avoid Posting "Call us for a free estimate!" every day
Don't hijack real conversation and arbitrarily steer people to your company. Bad look.
Group admins often remove obvious self-promotion. In a few words: just be genuine, present, and do a good job and the leads show flow from there.
For contractors in Northern Virginia, we've seen neighborhood groups in Centreville, Fairfax, Ashburn, Leesburg, and Gainesville outperform many paid advertising channels because homeowners frequently ask for recommendations and trust local feedback.
